Columbia County officers do not need weapons, says Senators

If Sen. Olsen has his way, no one will be carrying a weapon.

"I'm hoping as time goes on that we're more civil to each other. In my picture of Wisconsin, in a civil society, we don't need people carrying guns," (Sen. Luther Olsen, R-Ripon) said.

The Sen. Olsen elaborated...

"If people carry guns in (public) places, the reason for carrying them is shooting people," (Sen. Mark Miller, D-Monona) said. "They may think it's for self-defense, but it's for shooting people. In Wisconsin, we're a safe state. We don't need to have that sort of self-protection."

Sen. Miller then chooses to ignore the state constitution, passed by the overwhelming majoring of WI citizens.

The bill is not a referendum on the right to bear arms for recreational purposes, Miller said. "There's not a legislator who doesn't support the right to hunt and fish and to be able to enjoy that. It's this issue of carrying a weapon in public places that we're talking about here," he said.

The State Constitution provides for recreation, defense, security and any other lawful purpose.

Here is where the reporter did not do their homework.

An amendment passed last week also extended the prohibition to youth sporting events, college buildings and churches, but the Senate reneged on an amendment extending the prohibition to day-cares and domestic abuse shelters.

They did not renege. There is a prohibition on day-cares and domestic abuse shelters, but these groups have the right to opt out of the restriction for their own safety.
