The Ohioans for Concealed carry site put some things in perspective for me.
The State of Wisconsin is currently embattled in the fight for the right to carry a concealed firearm, similar to where Ohio was a little under two years ago.
Like Ohio, compromises have been hammered out in order to gain support for the bill. One of these compromises involves law enforcement lobbying groups who were opposed to the bill.
It was announced today that the LEO lobbying groups are no longer opposed to the bill after it was amended to require that an alert pop up on an officer's computer notifying him or her that the registered owner of a stopped vehicle was issued a concealed handgun licence.
"This way we would know before we approach the vehicle," said Casey Perry, executive director of the Wisconsin Troopers Association. "We think it's a safety issue for the people that we stop, as well as the officers. It is major because it's a deal breaker for us."
Ohio faced a similar conundrum when attempting to get H.B. 12 passed, which was opposed by the leadership of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Unfortunately for Ohioans, rather than a more workable compromise like Wisconsin has ironed out, we ended up with the horrendous "plain sight" requirement IN ADDITION to the computer alert.
Fortunately, Representative Jim Aslanides' new CCW reform bill, if passed, would remove that legislative error. Wisconsin has the wisdom to not repeat our mistake; we can only hope that our own legislature is smart enough to learn from it as well.
Glad that is not in our bill.
